Summary:
A public discussion titled "Poisoned debate – blocked paths: How we can stand together despite the Israel/Palestine conflict," which was planned for October 15 by Evangelische Stadtakademie München, was canceled at short notice by the Munich Dean's Office. The invited speakers were Fuad Hamdan, a Palestinian activist from Munich, and Gady Gronich, the managing director of the European Rabbinical Conference in Munich. The reason given was social media posts by Hamdan in which he compared Netanyahu to Hitler and Gaza to the Warsaw Ghetto and described the war in Gaza as a genocide. The cancellation stemmed from an email written by Volker Beck to the antisemitism commissioner of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). The decision was criticized by all invited speakers as well as the academy director Barbara Hepp.
