Summary:

In mid-February 2025, Nirit Sommerfeld was invited and announced as a speaker for the Chemnitz Peace Day on March 5, 2025. A few weeks later, the Peace Day working group (AG Friedenstag) withdrew the invitation.

Thomas Schuler of the AG Friedenstag justified the disinvitation by saying that "controversies" had arisen around Sommerfeld that ran counter to the rally's theme, "Making peace through reconciliation." A timely resolution was not possible, he said.

Nirit Sommerfeld, a Jewish German-Israeli, is among other things a co-founder of the association "Bündnis zur Beendigung der israelischen Besatzung" (Alliance for Ending the Israeli Occupation, today known as "Bündnis für Gerechtigkeit zwischen Israelis und Palästinensern," or Alliance for Justice between Israelis and Palestinians) and has belonged to Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East since 2019. She subsequently published the speech she had prepared for Peace Day on her own website.
