|
Summary:
On November 30, the first Sunday of Advent, Ashwaq Shop – a stall selling Palestinian handicrafts from Bethlehem and other regions, including tatreez embroidery, ceramics, woodwork, and jewelry – opened at the Alexanderplatz Christmas Market in Berlin. Within an hour, police inspected the stand and found it formally compliant. The following day, Bild, Welt, and the Berliner Zeitung published articles framing the stall as antisemitic, with Welt claiming, “Antisemitism has arrived in society – Palestine souvenirs at the Christmas market.” Shortly afterward, market management ordered the removal of small items such as watermelon earrings and pendants in the shape of historical Palestine. On the third day, the owner closed the stall, citing sustained media pressure and administrative intervention.
