Summary:
After pressure from the City of Bochum, the cultural center Bahnhof Langendreer canceled an exhibition titled Guernica Gaza by the Palestinian artist Mohammed Al-Hawajri. The exhibition includes a work of the same name that was accused of antisemitism as part of documenta 15 in 2022. The basis of the accusations is that the work allegedly implies an equation of Israel with Nazi Germany by linking the attack on Guernica in the Spanish Civil War, in which the Nazi air force was involved, with Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. In a letter to Bahnhof Langendreer, Bochum's head of cultural affairs, Dietmar Dieckmann (SPD), referred to these accusations and declared that the planned exhibition would "encourage antisemitic resentment," urging the cultural center not to hold the exhibition. Members of the SPD and FDP in Bochum demanded cuts to state funding for the arts center if it did not cancel. Bahnhof Langendreer ultimately canceled the exhibition, stating that the public discussion surrounding the exhibition no longer served the original aim of “opening up spaces for discourse on the subject of the Middle East conflict.”
